Why choose A-Level Government and Politics?

The Government and Politics course increases students understanding of the political system of the United Kingdom which includes local and European Union perspectives. The study of this course will allow students to understand the system that they live in and the rules that govern that system. This course will develop skills including Analytical skills, Evaluation and Investigation, Enquiry, Organisation and Communication.

Course Outline

The Course is run by Edexcel. There are 4 units of which 3 are assessed by examination and 1 by coursework.

There are 4 units

Unit 1 People and Politics - Written Examination of 1 hour 20 minutes
AS - 50% of final AS Mark A2 - 25% of final A2 Mark

Unit 2 Governing the UK - Written Examination of 1 hour 20 minutes
AS - 50% of final AS Mark A2 - 25% of final A2 Mark

Unit 3 Key Themes in Political Analysis - Written Examination of 1 hour 30 minutes
Introducing Political Ideologies - A2 - 25% of final A2 Mark

Unit 4 Extended Themes in Political Analysis - Written Examination of 1 hour 30 minutes
Extending Political Ideologies - A2 - 25% of final A2 Mark

Careers and progression

The study of Government and Politics will act as an excellent preparation for many academic courses at Degree Level as it develops many of the disciplines that academic courses require. The professions that would consider this course to give a good skills base include - Law, Journalism, Media, Politician, Public Services (including Senior Grades of the Civil Service) and many administration based careers.

Entry requirements

Students will need to have 5 A-C grades which should include an A-C grade at GCSE English Language.
