A-Level ICT

Why choose A-Level ICT?

A-level ICT is valuable in industry as it shows that the student is capable of logical thought and planning. Computer system design capability shows that the person is able to plan efficiently, taking into account many different circumstances and is able to produce a solution that works under many different circumstances.

Course Outline

We are intending to offer both AS and A2 courses that build on one another. There are compulsory units in both courses and a limited choice of other units. The course is flexible and allows students to opt for units that will allow interests to be followed.

Resources and facilities

We have two main suites of computers dedicated to ICT as a subject. Around the site there are several other suites that contain specialist equipment for other ICT rich areas such as Media and Music. The PLC contains resources that are available to all students and has an open and welcoming atmosphere. A full range of peripherals are available to aid the delivery of and interaction with the course materials including DV-cameras, control kits, digital stills cameras, tablets amongst others.

Careers and progression

With A-levels still the “gold standard” for entry to University this course is a very good option for those wishing to continue into Higher Education with more than a passing knowledge of a few programs. The fundamental logical processes and techniques used behind computer program design are taught as well as a philosophical appreciation of the use of computers in society – in fact for those who wish to go into industrial programming then an ideal partner for this course is Philosophy.

Entry requirements

No previous ICT qualification is required to start ICT but a good pass Grade B or above in both Maths and Science would normally be required. Level 2 ICT qualifications are a valuable secondary attribute.
