Btec First Certificate in Science (level 2)
Why choose the Btec First Certificate in Science?
The BTEC First Certificate in Applied science is ideal for those students who may wish to pursue a career in scientific research or a technician’s post but have been unsuccessful at GCSE. The course is assessed on portfolio work and so is suitable for students who enjoy learning independently and at their own pace.
Course Outline
The exam board is Edexcel. There are three units which cover the core GCSE content of Physics, Biology and Chemistry. Each unit is divided into assessment tasks which can be completed to Pass, Merit or Distinction level. All assessment is based on practical skills, research and demonstrating knowledge through portfolio work.
Resources and facilities
The department at Castle Manor is well resourced with textbooks (three new ranges), specialist equipment and teachers and access to ICT facilities. Students will benefit from using apparatus appropriate to higher level qualifications and will practice the skills required b employers within and beyond the field of science.
Careers and progression
The BTEC First Certificate enables students to access higher level vocational qualifications such as level 3 BTEC Certificates or Diplomas. Students who achieve Distinction grades at BTEC could consider studying A levels in one or more science. The BTEC First Certificate is a level 2 (GCSE equivalent) qualification and as such will provide access to further education courses.
Many students who study the BTEC route consider a career in the research science field or as a technician. However, with the relevant work experience candidates could progress onto careers in management, teaching or higher level research.
The BTEC First certificate will also be an essential qualification for careers such as teaching in which a GCSE Grade C or equivalent is required.
Entry requirements
Whilst there are no entry requirements for this course we would strongly recommend that a student who has not achieved 5 A-E GCSE including Maths, English and Science should not take the course. Any student sho wishes to apply for this course without these minimum standards would have to be interviewed before admission onto the course.
Course Results
This course is being offered for the first time this year.
